Fire Prevention Compliance
Know your Statutory Obligations for fire prevention
Aqua Fire Prevention can guarantee that your fire extinguishers will comply with current fire safety Regulations and Standards upon completion of works.
The Health and Safety Authority requires you to comply with the following;
Fire Services Act 1981-2003
“Fire-fighting equipment must be in place for employees to use, without exposing themselves to danger, to extinguish a fire in its early stages. The equipment must be suitable to the risks and appropriate staff will need training and instruction in its proper use.”
Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005
As an employer you are legally required to carry out a risk assessment and implement measures for fire prevention, fire detection and warning, emergency escape and fire-fighting equipment.
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 also requires that training is provided by employers to ensure the safety of employees against the dangers that may affect them, including fire.
Maintaining a fire safety register for all business premises is also a legal requirement under this act.
Irish Standard IS 291: 2015 Fire Extinguishers
Fire Equipment must be serviced annually by a competent person qualified to do so.
All fire extinguishers have a finite useful life of 10 years.
Suitable fire safety signage must be fitted to accompany all fire-fighting equipment.
Neck rings must be fitted to all fire extinguishers which have been discharged and refilled.
All reports and certificates issued must meet a minimum standard per IS 291.
Service Labels must be attached to all fire equipment providing comprehensive information.
As not all fires are the same, it is important to understand the different classes of fire and what fire extinguishers are best on certain fires.
- Class A Fire
Fires involving solid combustibles and organic materials, such as paper, packaging, furniture, wood and textiles.
Suitable Fire Extinguishers
Foam extinguishers, Water Extinguishers & Powder Extinguishers (no cooling properties) - Class B Fire

Suitable Fire Extinguishers

Suitable Fire Extinguishers for Class F
Wet chemical fire extinguishers are the only fire extinguishers recommended for use with cooking oil fires and deep fat fryers. All kitchens with those risks present must have a Class F wet chemical fire extinguisher.
Water (Class A type fire ONLY)
Water fire extinguishers are used only on Class A type of fires and are suitable for fighting fires involving solid combustibles such as wood, paper and textiles.
Foam Extinguishers (aka “A Triple F”)
They can be used on both Class A and Class B fires containing materials such as wood, paper and other solid combustibles as well as flammable liquids including petrol and spirits.
Carbon Dioxide (Co2 Extinguishers) – Class B & Electrical Equipment
ABC Multi-Purpose Dry Powder Extinguishers Class A, B, C and Electrical Equipment
Dry powder is a multi-purpose extinguisher.
A dry powder fire extinguisher is also known as an ABC unit because it can tackle Class A, B and C fires.
Wet Chemical Extinguishers – Class A & F
Wet chemical fire extinguishers are recommended for use on fires involving cooking oils and deep-fat fryers. They should be fitted in all kitchens with those risks.
